CBD Oil vs. Hemp Seed Oil

CBD Oil vs. Hemp Seed Oil

CBD oil vs hemp seed oil, is there a difference? The hemp plant is one of the most valuable gifts from mother nature.

This is largely due to cannabidiol (CBD), its dominant chemical compound that has been shown through years of research to offer a large variety of potential benefits to our bodies and minds.

CBD is found in the flowering buds of the hemp plant, but the plant is made up of a number of parts including leaves, stalks, stems and seeds.

With that being said, one product that can confuse CBD enthusiasts is hemp seed oil.

There’s a significant difference between hemp seed oil and CBD oil, despite them both coming from the same plant.

So, let’s clear up any confusion between the two.

CBD Oil vs Hemp Seed Oil: Both Derivatives of the Hemp Plant

Both CBD oil and hemp seed oil are oils that come from the hemp plant.

However, the hemp plant consists of multiple parts, and each part of the plant has a distinctive chemical composition, which is why the difference between the two types of oils is so drastic.

Let’s break it down.

What is Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp seed oil is an oil derived from the seeds of the hemp plant, as the name would imply.

Typically produced by cold-pressing the seeds, hemp seed oil is used as a dietary oil, due to it being a source of “healthy” fats and being very rich in essential nutrients including omega fatty acids and amino acids.

Hemp seed oil is rarely used outside of cooking, with the exception of acting as a carrier oil for therapeutic products.

In fact, some CBD oil tinctures contain hemp seed oil as their carrier oil.

Hemp seed oil is rich in nutrients, but it does not contain cannabinoids or terpenes – both come from the flowering buds of the hemp plant, and that’s why the buds are the source of CBD products.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is an oil extracted from the flowering buds of the hemp plant, where we find over a hundred unique cannabinoids including cannabidiol.

These buds also provide us with the large array of terpenes found in the plant which also offer valuable properties, while giving the plant its flavor and aroma.

This is why CBD oil (full and broad spectrum, specifically) has a flavor and aroma, and hemp seed oil does not.

Cannabinoids and terpenes develop in the plant only after it has matured and budded, so the seeds of the plant have not yet developed these compounds.

So, if you’re searching for CBD, then hemp seed oil is not going to give you what you’re looking for.

Remember, CBD oil comes in a variety of forms:

  • Full spectrum: The complete variety of compounds in the buds of the plant.
  • Broad spectrum: Contains all compounds with the exception of THC
  • Isolate: Simply a purified cannabidiol extract.

CBD oil can also be referred to as “CBD drops” or a “CBD tincture”, because sublingual administration is the most common use for it.

It’s diluted in a carrier oil, like hemp seed oil or MCT oil, and may or may not contain flavoring ingredients as well.

How Easy is it to Confuse the Two?

confusing hemp and cbd

Sometimes, the terms “CBD oil” and “hemp oil” are used interchangeably, and at the same time, “hemp seed oil” and “hemp oil” can also be used interchangeably.

So, you can see why it’s so easy to confuse the two.

This is why you should read the ingredients on a product’s label, where you’ll easily see whether the product is made from the hemp seeds, or whether it’s made from the flowers.

Another thing to be aware of is that nowadays, companies are more likely to be confusing on purpose.

For example, if you look up “CBD” on Amazon, you’ll see a lot of companies selling products labeled as “hemp oil” which don’t actually contain CBD.

This is because they are derived from the plant’s seeds, although the phrasing on the label is may be misleading to make you think it contains CBD.

Plus, CBD is illegal to sell on Amazon, so you will come across many brands that want to profit off of the popularity of CBD, without actually having any CBD in their products.
